The Story Behind The Pin

For years, every statistic I read about domestic violence seemed to just be numbers...until I became just that: a number. People forget that behind every statistic is a human being. After taking my own time to heal, I decided that I wanted to use my voice to spread awareness and advocate for survivors and victims. This September, I joined the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence as a member of Voices, their national speakers' bureau. I wanted to find a way to get my message across this October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month that didn't necessarily involve my words. My mind immediately was set on creating a pin to try and capture the idea that every single person, whether they have been affected indirectly or directly by domestic violence, have the ability to say enough is enough. My concept became pretty clear: I wanted to convey that the wearer of this pin made a pinky promise to take a stand against domestic violence in any form it takes, and support victims and survivors both globally and in their own communities.

This pin design was brought to life by one of the most talented people I have ever met, illustrator and designer Christian Arnder. He has been one of the brightest lights guiding me through my own healing by supporting me every day, whether good or bad, and showing me what a healthy relationship truly looks like.
